What is it?

Animation is a career pathway offered through the R.O.P Program at Warren High School. Because it is a career pathway, you can take it all four years of your high school experience -if you want to, that is. You do not have to. There are four levels to the animation pathway and each level is one-year long. The objective is to provide students with the skills it takes to pursue a career in an animation studio directly out of high school or to place them ahead of their peers at an animation school or college. A list of the subject matter and course work is available from your school counselor.

Why take animation?

There are several reason to consider takin classes in animation. First, animation is everywhere. It's not just limited to Saturday morning or week day afternoon cartoon shows. Animation is all voer the internet, on web sites, in training modules, buisness presentations, and the gaming industry--in addition to television and film.

Second, all of the course work is UC/CSU approved and meets all of the requirements for a visual and performing art. As mentioned earlier, you can take animation all four years, but you don't have to. You're free to try it for a year, take some other course work the next, and then come back and pick up where you left off.

Third, it's more that drawing pictures! It is a THINKING PROCESS involving the study of movement and life and how to give them meaning and expression.

Last of all, it's fun and entertaining! What other class are you allowed to draw or watch cartoons and not get in trouble for it, huh?

What do you learn?

You begin with sharpening your basic drawing skills and move quickly into traditional animation involving the use of pencils and a light box. Guided by principles of animation
